The bayonet appears to be the second 1873 type. Poyer says that such bayonets were cold-pressed from model 1855 bayonets to reduce the diameter to fit the .45-70 rifle barrel. I base my assumption on the rough appearance of the socket interior. I have no idea what the "42" stamp signifies.
