Checking Female Rufous for Body Fat

Steve Locke blows gently through a soda straw to displace the bird's feathers so that he can assess the amount of body fat. This female carried very little fat.

Fat deposits would have suggested that she had not finished migrating to her wintering ground. Resident birds seldom carry any fat.
