Male Rubythroat
Archilochus colubris. These first five images were photographed in late August north of St. Francisville, Louisiana. All four are the same bird. The appearance of the bird's iridescent gorget (throat patch) changes dramatically depending on the angle of the light and position of the feathers. After approaching within two feet to look me over, he ignored me, concentrating instead on attacking any other hummingbirds that dared to approach the feeder near my left shoulder.
