This tree is located on property owned by the Nature Conservancy at Cat Island, Louisiana. It measures more than 53 feet in circumference at chest level.
According to the
Louisiana Purchase Cypress Legacy organization, it is "the largest virgin cypress on the planet" and the world's sixth largest known tree of any species. Coastal redwoods are the only trees in the world that are larger.
Experts say that a 12-inch diameter at that height typically indicates an age of about 200 years, and they estimate the age of this tree at between 800 and 1,500 years.
